Inspirations Feature, What Inspires Katrina Alexander

"Inspired by objects from everyday life, Katrina Alexander uses an ancient technique to create modern looking jewellery...

STARTING MY BUSINESS

I started making jewellery as an antidote to the stress of being responsible for large scale corporate events in London. After running two events companies with turnovers of over five million I decided that I wanted to move into something completely different. I had been making jewellery for a couple of years when friends encouraged me to turn this into a business and so in September 2009 I started actively marketing my jewellery, and attending trade shows.

HOW I CREATE MY JEWELLERY

I create silver jewellery much of which is made using the technique of lost wax carving, an ancient art that dates back many thousands of years. The design is first sketched onto paper before being transferred to the wax, cutting and etching as necessary before filing smooth. A rubber mould is then made from the wax piece and molten silver (or another metal of choice) is poured into the mould, creating a finished piece in silver. Working in wax allows beautiful curves, variations in shape and gradients and intricate designs.

MY INSPIRATIONS

My inspiration comes from the shapes around me in everyday life, ranging from the way that shards of light fall through shutters to design details on objects. I particularly like textures and ideas often come from interior design, such as the way a hotel bar or feature wall is textured or lit. I also like to work with a piece of wax or silver and see how the shape develops whilst carving or manipulating it."
